Kinds of authority

Professional licensing body

A body that licenses, regulates and disciplines individual practitioners in a profession rather than firms.

Overview

Professional regulators govern people: lawyers through bar associations and law societies, doctors through medical boards and colleges of physicians, engineers through bodies such as Professional Engineers Ontario and APEGA, and accountants through CPA bodies and state boards of accountancy.

Their requirements follow the individual, which means a firm’s compliance depends on the licences, continuing education and conduct of its people.

It connects most directly to State bar associations, State medical boards, Professional Engineers Ontario, Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta and Medical licensing.

Check the official sources below for legal scope, applicable dates and exceptions. This entry is an explanatory reference, not legal advice.

Why it matters

A lapsed licence can make work invalid or uninsurable, and expose the firm that relied on it.
