Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI)

Canada’s federal prudential regulator of banks, insurers and federally regulated pension plans.

Overview

OSFI supervises federally regulated financial institutions for safety and soundness, sets capital and liquidity requirements and issues guidelines on governance, technology, cyber and third-party risk.

Its powers include writing binding rules, supervising and examining the organisations it oversees, investigating and imposing penalties and restricting activities or withdrawing permissions.

In Canada it works at federal level, alongside FCAC. Instruments connected to it in this glossary include OSFI guidelines and Bank Act (Canada).

Check the official sources below for legal scope, applicable dates and exceptions. This entry is an explanatory reference, not legal advice.
